A little preparation goes a long way in making your child’s first riding lesson a positive experience. Here are some tips to help your family get ready:
Explain to your child that they’ll be meeting a big, friendly animal and learning something new. Let them know it’s normal to feel a little nervous, and that their instructor will be there to help every step of the way.
Arriving 10-15 minutes before the lesson gives your child time to settle in, meet the instructor, and get comfortable in the new environment.
Let your child know it’s okay to ask questions—about the horses, the equipment, or anything they’re curious about. The more they know, the more confident they’ll feel.
Remind your child that learning to ride is a process. Everyone starts as a beginner, and it’s okay to make mistakes or feel unsure at first. Celebrate effort and bravery, not just perfect results.
Bring a water bottle, a snack for after the lesson, and a camera if you want to capture the moment. If your child has allergies (to hay, horses, or anything else), let the instructor know in advance.
Every child learns at their own pace. Some may be ready to ride independently after one lesson, while others need more time to build confidence. Trust the instructors and support your child’s unique journey.
