At WildHeart Riding School in Apopka, Florida, every horse has a story. But thereās something particularly special about the ones whoāve had a full career before stepping into the role of gentle teachers. One of our most beloved horses is a retired show jumper, now spending his golden years helping new riders build confidence, strength, and trust.
Before arriving at WildHeart, this gelding had years of experience in the jumper ring, flying over courses at regional and national competitions. His athleticism, sharp brain, and responsive nature made him a dream ride for experienced ridersābut now, heās our go-to horse for teaching walk-trot and beginner canter lessons.
Why? Because he knows. He knows how to listen to even the quietest cues. Heās tuned into his riderās body language. And more than anything, he understands his job is different nowāand he embraces it.
Experienced horses like him are gold in a riding school setting. Theyāve been there, done that. Theyāve heard the applause, seen the chaos, and learned to stay calm no matter what.
When a child is learning to post for the first time, or a teen is tackling their first ground pole course, theyāre riding with a seasoned veteran who wonāt overreact. That trust between horse and rider?
It starts from the ground up, and horses like this build it instantly.
Even though he's no longer jumping, he still needs specialized care. At WildHeart, we:
This level of care is standard for all our senior and retired horses. We donāt use horsesāwe partner with them. And when theyāve given so much in their lifetime, they deserve rest, respect, and thoughtful work.
There are things only a horse can teach:
A retired show jumper teaches these lessons in a calm, almost magical way. He's not just a lesson horseāheās a quiet mentor.
Too often, retired show horses get passed along until they break down. Not here. At WildHeart, we believe in purposeful retirement. That means a second chapter where their wisdom shines. He may no longer be competing, but the work heās doing now? Equally important.
Heās giving kids their first canter.
Heās helping a nervous adult take her first ride in 10 years.
Heās showing timid beginners how to steer with confidence.
And every time, he does it with ears forward and steady steps.
If your child is just starting out, or youāre looking to return to the saddle after time away, you might just ride him yourself. Heās part of our WildHeart team now, and heās not going anywhere.
Weāve got plenty of incredible horses, but this one reminds us every day: just because a horse isnāt jumping anymore doesnāt mean his job is done. In fact, it might just be his most important work yet.
