At WildHeart Riding School in Apopka, Florida, every horse has a story. But there’s something particularly special about the ones who’ve had a full career before stepping into the role of gentle teachers. One of our most beloved horses is a retired show jumper, now spending his golden years helping new riders build confidence, strength, and trust.

From High-Flying to Grounded Grace

Before arriving at WildHeart, this gelding had years of experience in the jumper ring, flying over courses at regional and national competitions. His athleticism, sharp brain, and responsive nature made him a dream ride for experienced riders—but now, he’s our go-to horse for teaching walk-trot and beginner canter lessons.

Why? Because he knows. He knows how to listen to even the quietest cues. He’s tuned into his rider’s body language. And more than anything, he understands his job is different now—and he embraces it.

Why Retired Pros Make the Best Teachers

Experienced horses like him are gold in a riding school setting. They’ve been there, done that. They’ve heard the applause, seen the chaos, and learned to stay calm no matter what.

When a child is learning to post for the first time, or a teen is tackling their first ground pole course, they’re riding with a seasoned veteran who won’t overreact. That trust between horse and rider?

It starts from the ground up, and horses like this build it instantly.

How We Care for Him Differently

Even though he's no longer jumping, he still needs specialized care. At WildHeart, we:

• Watch his joints closely and provide regular bodywork
• Supplement with joint support to keep him comfortable
• Never overwork him—if he’s done one or two lessons a day, that’s it
• Allow him lots of turnout time, so he stays mentally relaxed
• Keep in touch with his past show records and medical history

This level of care is standard for all our senior and retired horses. We don’t use horses—we partner with them. And when they’ve given so much in their lifetime, they deserve rest, respect, and thoughtful work.

What He Teaches Kids (That a Human Can’t)

There are things only a horse can teach:

• Patience: You can’t rush grooming or tacking up
• Empathy: You learn to read moods and energy
• Balance and timing: No simulator or video game can replicate the feeling of a horse responding to your seat
